[ London: M. F. for Nathaniel Butter, 1634 ]. Folio (bound in sixes). 6ff./452pp./4ff./214pp. Lacks general title and next leaf, text starts with dedication(carefully repaired), followed by contents. The half title: "Contemplations. The First Booke.. By Jos. Hall D. of Divinitie, and Deane of Worcester. Imprinted at London in the yeare 1634." There are infact 21 further titles contained within this collection of Hall's works. Slight irregular staining throughout. The final leaf is damaged with 10% loss, affecting 10 lines of text. The last 80 leaves have been carefuly strengthened, the degradation of the paper somtimes affecting the marginal notes. 19th century cloth binding with later re-back. Overall a well preserved book. First 9 leaves (including title) with hole (carefully repaired using archival standard materials) to top of page, affecting a few words of text. A translation into English from the original French, by William Wake, of: Dufour de Longuerue, Louis: "Traitté d'un autheur de la communion romaine touchant la transsubstantiation." The preface is signed, ' R. M.' Clear English text throughout on toned/stained paper, just a couple of corners and a few words of text absent. The present volume published in France in 1693 is entitled: “The Instruction of Priests: Containing the essential teaching which illustrates the excellence of the priesthood and describes the means to worthily fulfill this ministry. Translated from Spanish into French by Rene Gaultier, A.G. A very good original vellum binding. Small 8vo. 6.5" x 4.0" x 2.0". [20pp.]/pp.770/[23pp. - "Table Des Matieres"] . Limp vellum covers. Soiled and rubbed. Clean French text throughout on lightly toned paper. VG. ** "Antonio De Molina was a Spanish Carthusian ascetical writer. A Spanish Carthusian and celebrated ascetical writer, born about 1560, at Villanueva de los infantes; died at Miraflores, 21 September, 1612 or 1619. In 1575 he entered the Order of Augustinian Hermits, was elected superior at one of their houses in Spain, and for some time taught theology. But wishing to join an order of stricter discipline, he became a Carthusian at Miraflores, where he died as prior of the monastery. He wrote in Spanish a few ascetical works, especially adapted for priests, which became the most popular books of their kind in Spain, and were translated into various foreign languages. The most famous of these is a manual for priests and bears the title: "Instruccion de Sacerdotes, en que se dá doctrina muy importante para conocer la alteza del sagrado oficio Sacerdotal, y para exercitarle debidamente".." - See Catholic Encyclopedia.
